As part of our forthcoming LIVE ART SPEED DATE EVENT at the Camden People’s Theatre, 13th March our audience will be connected with Chatroulette (a videochat randomizer)

STK are attempting to engage as many artists as possible to participate during the hours of the event.[19:30 - 22:30 GMT] with the aim of flooding the this bizarre online network with artistic interaction.

All you have to do is log on to www.chatroulette.com at 19:00 GMT and start your screen based interaction with the code phrase “Moshi, Moshi? Live Art Speed Date Camden?”.  Take a look at chatroulette and conceive of a very short interaction or performance.  This project is part of STK’s wider exploration of ‘Live Screen Interaction’, culminating in an online festival in the summer.

Please forward this call to as many people as possible, in as many different countries as possible, let us wrest chatroulette from the hands of the gun-stroking Nazis, prick gazers and the boring desk-dwellers!

LASD is a vibrant fairground of private encounters between artist and audience. In a large room artists occupy booths, tables, and dark corners where they perform their four-minute-long ‘date’ to their guest. The audience are given cards for the date they want, and when not ‘dating’ engage in auto-dates and other playful interactions. The whole event is highly charged and opens discussions between audience members as to what they have experienced, examines the phenomenon of the encounter, and tests the boundaries of performance. By socialising the event we turn up the heat on what is ‘private’. That ‘privacy’ can be thought of as ownership of the potential experience, and so the dates are commodified.  The ensuing market drives anticipation and increases the perceived value of each encounter.  As the reports come back from the dates the private encounter enjoys a second, public life as a myth of itself.
